According to the Decision made at the Project’s meeting in Cluj, Romania (July 16, 2000) and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Aug. 9, 2000), the second year’s(2001) workshop will take place in China, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 12, 2001. It will include two part: the first part(from Aug.30 to Sept. 2, 2001, Beijing) is a symposium in conjunction with the International Conference of Sustainable Development in Karst Regions. The second part is the IGCP 448 workshop (Sept.3-Sept.12, 2001) which will be a 10-day, 4000km long field seminar in south China (Chongqing, Guiyang, Stone Forest and Guilin). So we would like to invite you cordially take part in this important event of IGCP 448.

The main objective of IGCP 448 in 2001 is to examine the karst ecosystem in subtropical humid monsoon areas, and to investigate the relationship between land use change and rock desertification in karst, and geochemical background of successful or failure in rehabilitation.

In Chongqing, the field excursion will be at the Jinfushan Karst Nature Preserve. The altitude ranges between 500m and 2200m a.s.l., with the geological coverage from Cambrian dolomite to Permian limestone. We are going to see how karst ecosystem changes with the variation of geological and topographical background (photo 1).

In Guiyang, we will visit the most deteriorated karst ecosystem(the karst rocky desert-photo 2) between Guiyang and Liupanshui city) on the 1200-1600m plateum, and typical sites of rehabilitation. Some cave fauna will also be examined.

In the Stone Forest near Kunming, Yunnan, a well-known karst scenic resort, a special ecosystem on limestone rock and some endangered cave species will be examined(photo 3).

In Guilin, besides subtropical karst, ecosystem on tower karst, and secondary vegetation on typical rehabilitation site and its relation with karst hydrology will be visited / discussed(photo 4).
